Lifeguard services

Professional council lifeguards patrol nine beaches within the Gosford LGA.

These beaches are: Wamberal, Terrigal, North Avoca, Avoca, Copacabana, MacMasters, Killcare, Ocean Beach and Umina Beach.

When swimming at one of our beaches, please remember:

  • No flags means no swimming;
  • Always swim or surf at patrolled beaches;
  • Swim between the red and yellow flags;
  • If we can’t see you, we can’t save you;
  • If you get into difficulty, raise your arm, stay calm, and yell for assistance;
  • If you are unsure of conditions, ask the lifeguard in attendance;
  • Please read and obey the signs and directions from the lifeguard or lifesaver;
  • Never run and dive into water, as the depth changes regularly;
  • Children should be supervised by an adult at all times; and
  • You should always ‘Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek and Slide’.

Beach wheelchairs

People with a disability will now find it easier to access Gosford City beaches, with beach wheelchairs available at selected surf clubs.

There are two types of beach wheelchairs available for use - six Sand Cruiser beach wheelchairs and two Hippocampe beach wheelchairs.

These wheelchairs are available at:

  • Avoca Beach - Sand Cruiser;
  • North Avoca - Sand Cruiser;
  • Copacabana - Sand Cruiser;
  • Killcare - Sand Cruiser;
  • Ocean Beach - Sand Cruiser;
  • Wamberal - Sand Cruiser;
  • Umina - Hippocampe (suitable for young people); and
  • Terrigal - Hippocampe (adult size).

You can contact the local surf club to book a beach wheelchair.

If you require contact details for the individual surf clubs, please call Surf Life Saving Central Coast on 4353 0299 or the Base Command Communication Centre on 4385 8106 from Monday to Friday.

You will also need to complete the Hippocampe Beach Wheelchair Indemnity Form before using a beach wheelchair, and sign it when you return the chair to the surf club.
