Important Information about your Council
The city of Gosford covers an area of 1,029 square kilometres, stretching east to the Tasman Sea, south to the Hawkesbury River, west to the Judge Dowling Range, and north to meet the Cessnock and Wyong Shires on a border through Kulnura, Lisarow and Forresters Beach.
The Council is responsible for the protection and improvement of the quality and standard of living in Gosford City. Council's Charter, under the NSW Local Government Act, is to properly manage, develop, protect, restore and conserve the environment of Gosford City in a manner that is consistent with and promotes the principles of ecologically sustainable development.
Council endeavours to satisfy the needs of both residents and visitors and anticipate their further requirements through the planning and implementation of physical and community development programs. These programs offer a wide range of physical, social, environmental and cultural services and facilities.
Gosford City Council comprises ten Councillors who are elected for a four year term to direct and control the affairs of the Council, in accordance with the Local Government Act. The Councillors review the performance of the Council and its delivery of services, financial and management plans and its annual budget.
The work of Councillors is voluntary and a small allowance is paid to compensate them for the cost of attending the many Council meetings and carrying out their civic duties.
Each September the Council also elects one of its members to the office of Mayor. The Mayor chairs all Council meetings and is chief spokesperson and civic leader.
