Responsible Cat Ownership

Gosford City Council recognises that pet ownership is an important part of our social structure.  There are a number of things you must do as a cat owner under the Companion Animal Act 1998, for the benefit of the wider community.

Microchip your cat - All cats born after 1 July 1999 must be microchipped. Microchipping is performed by veternarians.  The microchip contains a unique identification number that allows Council to identify the pet's owner through a central registry. If you had your cat prior to 1 July 1999 it must be identified by either a microchip or a collar around it's neck with an identification tag, stating the address or telephone number of the owner,

Get your cat registered - All cats born after 1 July 1999 must be registered for life. Registration only needs to be done once and ensures that your pet can be returned to you if it is found wandering.

If you change you address or contact details please notify Council on 4325 8222 to ensure your pet can be returned home.

Cats are prohibited from National Parks and Kincumber Mountain, Rumbalara and Katandra Reserves.

Caring for your cat

Council encourages residents to keep cats indoors, to help protect our native wildlife.

Each year, millions of cats are run over by cars, mauled by dogs, poisoned and lost. Hundreds of millions of birds and small mammals are killed annually by free-roaming cats.
