Gosford City Council's School Environment Program

The Greenhouse Program is an environmental education program designed for primary schools in the Gosford region.

The aim of the program is to foster a strong understanding of environmental issues and a commitment to positive environmental behaviour within our schools. The program is theme based each year a resource package is developed centred around one particular environmental issue.

Students and schools are challenged to undertake initiatives within their school and homes that will impact positively on this issue.

Past themes of this program include climate change, waste education, biodiversity, stormwater management, catchment protection, recycling, reusing, water education and global warming.

In addition to receiving a comprehensive package filled with up to date information, valuable resources and class activities, participating schools and students are encouraged to enter a number of theme based competitions.

Competition components are:

  • Individual student projects
  • School dramatic performance
  • Environmental School of the Year

The program culminates with the annual Presentation of Awards Ceremony held at Laycock Street Theatre. This is a wonderfully colourful event where schools and students are recognised and rewarded for their commitment to creating a stronger and healthier world environment.

Leaving smaller footprints greenhouse program theme logo

An ecological footprint is a measure used worldwide to determine the human demand on the planet's resources. Nature provides us with food, forest products, fuel, minerals, fibres, and much more. It also absorbs our waste, in particular the carbon dioxide that is produced by our industrial practices.

Our footprint is a measure of the land needed to provide all of these resources we use, and the land needed to absorb the waste we produce.

The theme for 2009 is based around this very important concept of ecological footprints. The resource package given to participating school gives background information to what is an ecological footprint it provides the tools to calculate school and individual footprints and it challenges both schools and student to find ways to reduce their footprint. All of this is done with fun and informative games, activities, competitions and programs.

Schools and individual students are still welcome to register for the 2009 program. For further information the Term 1, 2009 Newsletter gives greater details on the various components of the program or alternatively you can contact the Council Environmental Education officer at anni.griffiths@gosford.nsw.gov.au or on 4325 8333.

Schools wishing to register should contact the Environmental Education Officer to organise a school visit.
