Place names of the Gosford District

Brief notes on the origins of local suburb and geographical place names. The origins and meanings of many place names are often uncertain or unknown.

Many indigenous place names were recorded by early European surveyors, but unfortunately meanings have not always come down to us.

Many 19th- and 20th-century place names are recorded, but occasionally conflicting meanings for the same place name cause confusion.

Early Gosford District land subdivision maps 1880s-1930s

These fascinating maps chart the growth of Gosford, Woy Woy and many local villages from the 1880s onwards.

Much of this early real estate subdivision occurred in the late 1880s, following the opening of the railway to Gosford.

Thank you to the State Library of NSW for kind permission to reproduce these maps.
