Council Resolves to Stop the Privatisation of NSW Electricity Utilities

14. 04. 2008 00:00

Gosford City Council strongly opposes the NSW Government's plan to privatise NSW's publicly owned electricity utilities.

The proposed privatisation of the NSW Electricity utilities stands to threaten the delivery of essential services, according to Councillor Terri Latella.

"Private owners may try to increase power consumption to maximise profits, the exact opposite of what we should be trying to achieve," said Clr Latella.

"Increased consumption of electricity will lead to potential blackouts and will increase greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to dangerous climate change," she said.

Council is concerned for future energy needs of the Central Coast, and is calling for the State Government to increase efficiency and renewable energy targets.

Under the proposal, the NSW Government will enter into long-term leases of the State's generators. In a letter, the Department of Premier and Cabinet stated that, "the restructure will involve the transfer of the Government's retail electricity functions to the private sector, and the lease of NSW power stations, with the exception of Snowy Hydro".

Council is focused on supporting its community; in particular the significant number of people employed in the power industry and will strongly oppose the plans.

Gosford Council has forwarded letters to the NSW Premier, Morris Iemma, and the Treasurer, Michael Costa, requesting the NSW Government better manage the State's future energy needs.

Council also requested the Government take urgent action in response to climate change by investing in energy efficiency in homes and businesses, and increasing its renewable energy targets, rather than selling off its assets.
