Trial water supply shutdown

28-07-2009 02:35 PM

Gosford City Council will undertake trial valve shutdowns of the water supply system in Woy Woy and Umina this week and next as part of its drinking water quality management program, Water Quality 2010.

On Wednesday 29 July, the trial shutdowns will commence in Farleigh Avenue, Pioneer Road and Rosewood Drive, Umina. Crews will then move south toward Cowper Road, Umina Beach along the western side of Ocean Beach Road on Thursday 30 July and Sunday 2 August to Tuesday 4 August.

Council will also complete trial shutdowns in the area west of Blackwall Road bounded by Terry Avenue, Victoria Parade and Green Street, Woy Woy on Wednesday 5 August. Further shutdowns will be trialled in the area bounded by Hillview Street, Nambucca Drive, Shoalhaven Drive and Dulkara Road, South Woy Woy on Thursday 6 August.

All work will take place between 9pm and 5am nightly to minimise impact on residents.

During this period, Council crews will intermittently disrupt water supply. Each interruption is expected to take approximately five minutes. Local water mains will be flushed after each interruption to remove discoloured water causing material from the system. However, residents may experience reduced water pressure and discoloured water during the work period.

Residents are advised to check water colour at the tap nearest their water meter before using any taps inside their property. In the event of discoloured water, residents are advised to call Council on 4325 8222.

The trial shutdowns will be followed by a program of hydrant replacement to further reduce discoloured water incidence in the area, commencing on 3 August. Residents in affected streets will be notified by mail.

Regular updates regarding current and upcoming works are available in the Drinking Water Quality section of Council's website: www.gosford.nsw.gov.au.

Water Quality 2010 is designed to protect, manage and maintain the quality of the region's drinking water supply. It incorporates a suite of activities under a 5-point plan including capital works, maintenance activities, monitoring and analysis programs, and changes to system management and operation.

Water Quality 2010 is Gosford City Council's multi-million dollar drinking water quality management program,

assisted by a $4.5 million contribution from the Australian Government's Water for the Future - Water Smart Australia program.
