Responsible pet ownership in Gosford City

Gosford City Council is reminding all dog owners within the Gosford City Local Government Area (LGA) of the current laws relating to responsible pet ownership in the community.
The Companion Animals Act 1998 requires that all dogs must be under the effective control of a competent person by means of an adequate chain, cord or leash which is attached to the dog and held or secured to the person. An exception to this is in designated off leash areas.
The Act requires that dogs must not enter food consumption areas, schools or child care centres, wildlife protection areas as designated by Council and within ten metres of children's playground equipment. All dog owners must also pick up their dog's droppings.
John Parkes, Council's Manager of Education and Compliance, says these laws are in place for the protection of everyone in the community from potential dog attack risks.
"Everyone within Gosford City is entitled access to a clean and safe environment, whilst maintaining the welfare of our four legged friends. If the laws are not upheld by residents or visitors, then fines will apply.
"Council's Rangers are out and about in the community from 6am to 6pm seven days per week ensuring dog owners are adhering to the Act's requirements and promoting responsible pet ownership throughout Gosford City", added Mr. Parkes.
While Council recognises that people have the right to access areas that are free from dogs, it also accepts that dogs are an important part of the social structure of Gosford City and that appropriate areas should be provided for their exercise and recreation.
There are many public areas in the LGA where dogs can be exercised both on and off the leash. For further information on dog exercise areas in Gosford City, visit Council's website at www.gosford.nsw.gov.au
