BOAT OWNERS HAVE TO DO IT AT HOME
Gosford City Council has completed a review of possible options for helping local and visiting boat owners flush their marine engines using alternative sources of water.
The detailed report, to be presented to Council at its full meeting on 5 December 2006, found that it is not feasible to install rainwater tanks at boat ramps throughout the Gosford area.
'We’ve given full consideration to all possible options to help local and visiting boat owners but unfortunately installing rainwater tanks at boat ramps is not a viable option,' said Gosford City Council Mayor, Laurie Maher.
'There are sound reasons for this including Council not being able to guarantee the quality of the tank water, significant set-up and operating costs as well as heightened safety issues at boat ramps due to possible congestion.
'We understand the frustration of boat owners at not being able to use town water externally but like so many other members of the community we're asking them to work with us to comply with Level 4 water restrictions and help conserve our valuable drinking water by not using it externally.'
Under Level 2 water restrictions, which were introduced on 17 May 2004, all external water use points including external showers and taps in public reserves were removed which meant boat users had to flush their marine engines at other locations.Â
The introduction of Level 4 water restrictions on 1 October 2006, which banned all external use of town water, meant flushing of boat motors using town water was not permitted.
The report to Council recommends that current temporary arrangements using alternative sources of water at boat owners' homes and other locations continue to be encouraged.
The report also recommends promotion of water efficient methods for flushing boat motors at home, holiday accommodation or at commercial car washing centres be included in the Council's ongoing community education program to help ensure widespread compliance with the current water restrictions.
'In talking to boat owners in the region, many have found cost effective and simple ways of flushing their engines so they can continue to enjoy the beautiful waters in and around the Central Coast,' said Laurie Maher.
'What we need to do now is make sure we help share these tips on how to flush your boat engine while still complying with Level 4 water restrictions with as many boat owners as possible as part water of our water communication programs.'
