Local School Children Take Centre Stage at Water Forum 2006

More than 14 local school children will present their own unique messages on the need to save water at this Saturday’s Water Forum 2006 at the Erina Centre.

The Forum has been organised by Gosford City Council to help local residents better understand the current water situation, what is being done about it and how the community can help by further reducing the amount of town water we use each day.

‘We thought it would be a great opportunity to hear what the next generation thinks about water and what ideas they have on how to save water around the home,’ said Gosford City Mayor Laurie Maher.

‘Despite the Forum taking place during the school holidays, the children have been very enthusiastic about getting involved and have put a lot of hard work into their individual and group presentations. They’ve all come up with their own water saving ideas and have been working on their speeches for the past two to three weeks.’

The children, which include families of Council employees, members of the Wyoming Youth Centre and pupils of Gosford Public School, range in age between 8 and 15 years.

Presentations at the Water Forum from the school children will include:

-                      Water and Our Future

-                      Saving Water at Home

-                      Benefits of a Rainwater Tank

-                      What Everyone Can Do to Save More Water

-                      How I Save Water at Home

-                      Water Recycling – A Positive Approach

-                      Stormwater – A Positive Approach

The Water Forum is open to everyone in the community. It will commence at 12 Noon with light refreshments available until 12.30pm. It is scheduled to finish at 4pm.

Key speakers include Ross Young, Executive Director, Water Services Association of Australia and from Gosford City Council’s Water & Sewer Directorate, Rod Williams, Director, Steve Martin, Manager Operations and Pam McCann, Manager, Asset Management.

The Forum will also include a one-hour question and answer session that will enable the community to raise their queries about the current water situation directly with senior Council managers.

Included in the event will be lots of interactive displays to help update everyone about the current water situation, the $100 million of capital works underway to future proof the region’s water supply system, what people can do to cope with Level 4 restrictions and how everyone can help save more water around the home.

One lucky attendee will also win a free rainwater tank or water efficient washing machine as part of the Water Forum 2006 Prize Draw.
