Gosford Olympic Pool Self Sufficient

Gosford Olympic Pool could potentially be self-sufficient from the town water supply as work begins on the installation of a Backwash Water Recycling System.

The Backwash Water Recycling System, uses reverse osmosis technology, to treat the backwash water to allow its safe reuse in the pool system.

The project also includes the installation of six rainwater tanks with a total storage capacity of 163kL. These tanks will serve two purposes: to harvest water from the 1655m2 roof area and to provide extra storage for the recycled backwash water.

Rainwater and recycled backwash water will be used for topping up of the pools, toilet flushing in amenities, cleaning of hard surfaces and the irrigation of gardens.

'Once this project is complete the pool is estimated to be able to reduce its town water consumption by 90%, which represents a massive annual saving of up to 16.7 million litres', said Gosford City Mayor Laurie Maher.

'This project is just one of a whole host of work that is in progress to replace the use of town water with alternate water sources'.

‘Currently, we’re saving nearly 500 million litres of town water a year by using, rainwater, stormwater and treated recycled water for irrigating parks and other non-drinking purposes within the Gosford LGA', said Mr Maher.

The project is due to be completed by August 2007. Council received $45,000 in round two of the Australian Governments Community Water Grants to assist with the funding, the total project is estimated to cost approximately $168,000.
