One step closer to performing arts centre

14-05-2007 10:00 AM

The Gosford Local Government Area is one step closer to having a performing arts and convention centre, regional library, foreshore upgrades and more, after Council resolved to apply for a special rate variation to fund the Civic Infrastructure Strategy (CIS).

Council, at last Tuesday's council meeting, resolved that subject to the inclusion of all objections and comments received, Council will make an application to the Minister of Local Government for a special rate variation of 6.48% general fund rate increase, plus the allowable rate increase, which is currently assumed at 3.5%.

The Civic Infrastructure Strategy projects will be the means for sustainable economic, social and community development for Gosford City, according to Council's Director of Corporate Services, Nic Pasternatsky.

"The community gave their opinion on what they want this region to be like in 20 years through Vision 2025, and the Civic Infrastructure Strategy is assisting us to achieve this target," said Mr. Pasternatsky.

"Many of these projects will bring employment to the area, protect our natural environment, provide for recreation activities, and will improve the quality of life for people in the region," he said.

"Projects in the strategy include a performing arts and convention centre that will be capable of holding 1,600 patrons, foreshore upgrades at Yattalunga and Ettalong, and a world-class cycleway system".

Gosford City Council established a list of 54 infrastructure projects to form the Civic Infrastructure Strategy. Each of the projects were assessed and prioritised using criteria identified from the Vision 2025 community consultation process. The first 33 projects are intended to be funded by the special rate increase.

These projects relate to sports, the environment, roads and traffic, culture and other areas of concern for across the Gosford Local Government Area.

The special rate variation for the cumulative increase would be for the financial years ending and including 2008 to 2012. The rate level for the Civic Infrastructure Strategy will then plateau at this level for a further 15 years when it will then decrease.
