Discoloured Water

Discoloured water is a change in the appearance or colour of the water supply. Sometimes, it can take on a yellow or reddish/brown tint to almost black, while other times it can appear milky white or blue.
Incidents of discoloured water are more common during summer and periods of high demand, in low-lying areas, suburbs at the furthest end of the water supply system, dead-ends and areas that normally experience low velocities.
Until recently, the incidence of discoloured water in Gosford had been increasing. This is, in part, due to the severe and ongoing drought which has restricted Council's normal mains cleaning programs to remove accumulated materials from the water supply system.
Council is dedicated to reducing discoloured water throughout the region and has developed an integrated program called Water Quality 2010 to minimise discoloured water events and the effects they have on the community.
More information on discoloured water is also available in Council's Discoloured Water Brochure (PDF File, 250kb).
