Progress to date

Water Quality 2010 has achieved a substantial amount through a comprehensive 5-point plan of capital works, maintenance activities, monitoring and analysis, management and operation, and communications since it was officially launched in December 2007.
Capital Works
- Constructed a pre-chlorination system at Somersby Water Filtration Plant
- Commenced construction of further enhancements to water treatment processes
- Commenced upgrades to reservoirs
- Restored large valves and replaced hydrants not protected against corrosion
- Installed valves and modified pipelines in preparation for mains cleaning
Maintenance Activities
- Intensively flushed reticulation mains throughout the region
- Undertook water mains cleaning trials
- Cleaned both trunk mains from Somersby to Koolewong
Management and Operation
- Modified operation of the Peninsula water supply system
- Commenced implementation of management framework under Australian Drinking Water Guidelines (ADWG) 2004
- Adopted a Drinking Water Quality Policy
- Undertook a risk assessment of the water supply system
- Held water quality awareness training for staff
Monitoring and Analysis
- Studied water chemistry to understand what the issues are
- Modelled system water quality
- Trialled multi-parameter monitoring equipment
- Established a water quality database
- Improved chlorine dosing control at the Somersby Water Filtration Plant
Communications
- Held stakeholder briefings
- Revised customer service processes
- Informed the community of project updates via media releases, advertisements in local press and shopping centre displays
- Maintained a dedicated drinking water quality section on Council's website
- Developed and implemented an advance warning system for potential discoloured water events
- Implemented a community discoloured water investigation
