How you can prepare for water supply interruptions

If Council needs to turn off the water supply to your home you will be notified at least 48 hours in advance. The notice will advise of the date and expected duration of the planned interruption.

To minimise inconvenience during these events, we recommend that you:

  • Collect enough water to meet your consumption and hygiene needs for the duration of the interruption before it begins
  • Make sure all internal and external taps are turned off before the interruption begins to avoid the risk of flooding when the supply is restored. If you accidentally turn on a tap during the interruption, turn it off immediately
  • Do not flush your toilet. If you must, use water collected before the interruption began
  • Do not use washing machines, dishwashers or water heating devices, including hot water systems, as air or discoloured water may become trapped in them which may stain laundry or dishes when supply returns.

If the planned interruption is expected to span longer than 10 hours, Council will make an alternate water source available via a standpipe. You will be advised of the location of this source in your letter of notification. In these circumstances, Council recommends you use a sanitised container to collect water from the standpipe. It is also suggested that you boil the water before consuming.

When water is restored, it is suggested that you:

  1. Run the tap nearest to the meter until it is clear, trying to capture as much of this water as possible to use on your garden or flush your toilet
  2. Run the cold water kitchen tap and all hot water taps in your house to ensure water is clear before using dish or clothes washing machines
  3. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for operating your dish and clothes washing machines once water supply is restored.
