Maintaining your rainwater tank

A properly maintained rainwater tank will ensure your system works effectively and protects the quality of your tank water.

To keep your water quality free of contaminants, it is important to carry out sensible maintenance on a regular basis, particularly before heavy rainfall is expected.

You can do this by:

  • Clearing your roof of overhanging tree branches
  • Removing leaves and debris from gutters and down-pipes
  • Ensuring all entries to the tank are sealed with mosquito-proof screens
  • Cleaning all inlet and overflow screens
  • Checking for corrosion on metal roofing materials, roof accessories, gutters, screens, piping and steel rainwater tanks
  • Installing a first flush device
  • Opening and cleaning first flush devices after rain
  • Monitoring sludge levels in the bottom of your rainwater tank every two to three years or if you notice any sediment in the water.
